BRITISH Invasion!!!

One of the coolest peculiarities of living in Montreal is that in spite of the Predominantly French Speaking culture,the old bond to the British Commonwealth is persisted in both language and culture year after year. Itis quite surprising how a lot of "Brit" pop culture has grown and flourished over the years with immigrants still arriving from the UK and settling here in Eastern Canada. The South Shore of Montreal has a strong British presence due to one of the region's strongest employer's, Pratt & Whitney of Canada (owned by United Technologies) imports a lot of its aerospace scientific talent from the UK. The result is something I like to call "MIKE MYERS SYNDROME" which is a lot of first and second generation Canadians who were raised and fed a diet on Royal Family Weddings, Thunderbirds, Dr. Who, Coronation Street, Hitch Hikers Guide through the Galaxy, Benny Hill, Beano Magazines, the Wombles and my favourite: Rupert the Bear! From a collectors stand point, it means that Matchbox, Corgi and Dinky Toy cars are MORE common than Hot Wheels in Canada, Meccano Sets dominate over EC Gilbert Erector sets, Action Man by Palitoy (British GI Joe), is a commonly discovered. Comemorative Collectibles relating to Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth, Edward the VII, and Queen Victoria are pervasive everywhere. British China, British Wedgewood, British confectionay tins, British Tobacco products, and even British Board Games like Monoploy and Scrabble are often UK editions made by companies like Spears Ltd. and Waddintons. I myself, am a product of the "MIKE MYERS SYNDROME". I cheer for Aston Villa (well, sometimes...), I actually know who the captain of Manchester United is I root for European side in the Ryder Cup, I get excited for THE ASHES!!!!, I DRINK SPITFIRE from a Glass I nicked from the Rising Sun or Carter Lane in the EC2 I get up early to watch Wimbeldon and the Open Championship on TV in the summer. and I know the difference between Brown Sauce and Red Sauce.
